Brief History
Cellorhythmics was formed nearly 10 years ago by James Hesford and Alfia Nakip-Bekova to explore new contexts for the cello which at the time was still locked into its classical confines. James comes from a self taught background of jazz, soul and rock and Alfia from traditional classical (Moscow Conservatoire - student of Mstislav Rostropovich).
Originally the band consisted of 2 cellos, Alfia and James, a percussionist (Neville Murray from Jah Wobble fame) and saxes (Di Pritchard from Loose Tubes). The music was originally writted for 4 cellos but it wasn't till the late 90's that the music was presented in this format. Since then many cellist have played for the band including:Ben Davis, Ken Ichinose, John Cottle, Steve Anstee,Andy Nice and double bass player Mario Castronari. Martin Radford is now a permanent member of the ensemble and the fourth cellist has been replaced with Sergio Laviola on electric bass and guitar. Mark Leyton Bennet (percussionist drummer) featured on the latest CD has now moved to the North of England and has been replaced with Brett Findlay from Kooler Shaker.
Cellorhythmics has 3 CD's recorded with their own label WCM (Working Classical Music) - "Invasion" , "Rise of the Cellorettes" and the sound track for David Almonds play "Heaven Eyes". Cellorhythmics performs regularly in the UK and Europe - France, Germany, Norway.
