Momo is the brainchild of former child prodigy Toni Castells, a one-time classical musician based in London who after starting his first pop band aged 11, has been since experimenting and fusing classical music with popular, electronic and other commercial genres of music achieving great success in different musical projects both in Spain and the UK. Momo’s debut studio album, ‘Unharmed’, reached the Top 20 on the iTunes Electronica charts in November 2007.

According to Grammy award winning classical producer Michael Haas, “the obvious reference to describe Toni’s music is: Morricone meets Satie. Morricone comes to mind because there is a cinematic vividness to Toni’s music that like his, exudes expanse and distance. It’s dramatic and seems to come from distant times and places. Satie because there is a certain painful nostalgia. Other obvious names are Gorecki and Philip Glass, but these are perhaps too simplistic and obvious and have to do mostly with the use of operatic voices singing vocalaises. Reynaldo Hahn is also relevant, because unlike Satie, he was a more sophisticated cultivator of melancholy and frankly, more serious as a composer.”

Momo's live performance is a contemporary opera in celebration of LOVE where music, poetry and visuals intertwine to creat a unique and moving live experience. Influenced by artists such as Björk, Sigur Rós, Kraftwerk and Radiohead amongst others, Momo merges a string quartet and a soprano with electric guitars and distorted beats, while angelical voices hover on top of the dense and captivating sonic and visual landscape.

Momo can be presented live in two different ways. Momo Kompakt is a showcase format with only Toni and two singers, whereas Momo Komplete is designed for big events and festivals and incorporates the prestigious Sacconi String Quartet, conductor Louis Sebastian Mander and collaborating visual artist Maria Kjartansdóttir.

Toni surrounds himself with a fabulous group of musicians for the show, all of them good friends, whom he calls the Momo Family and whom he mostly met during his time at the Royal College of Music in London. The Sacconi String Quartet is one of the most highly regarded string quartets in the UK at the moment and they are conducted by conductor Louis Sebastian Mander. Pop singer Beth Rodergas is a superstar in Spain where her debut album sold over 500,000 copies. Singer Roberta Howett was a finalist on the British X Factor, mentored by Sharon Osbourne and Amelia Whiteman is a third of operatic trio Elysium Divas. Collaborating visual artist Maria Kjartansdóttir is one of the most promising Icelandic photographers of her generation.
